The courtyard house

The traditional form of Beijing's Hu-tung alley courtyard houses, or 'Siheyuan' in Chinese language, has a long history and dates from the Han dynasty (3rd century BC-3rd century AD). In the course of architectural history, this compact residential form attained great significance. Facing the street, the house is enclosed by a surrounding wall, and in each case four buildings, with facades opening inwards, surround a central courtyard that becomes an additional interior space. In the conception of the courtyard house, courtyard or garden are somewhat displaced from the centre towards an outer wall, without the central significance of intimacy and shelter becoming lost. In the skeleton architecture there is a clear separation of supporting framework and wall surface, whereby the constructive system remains evident as an aesthetic subdivision: function and aesthetics thus coincide. Equally important is the open plan design, the flexibility of the spaces, the permeation of interior and exterior and the opening to the garden extending the full width of the house. In these types of courtyard houses, function is symbolically united with the fundamental meaning of living: sheltered enclosure; and an openness to the outside world. This design enables a relatively dense settlement with numerous dwellings. It thus represents an alternative to the now problematic development of public districts using detached houses. From the urban planning point of view, these adjacent courtyard houses, each with one courtyard and access or transit streets, permit entire residential developments within a relatively small area. The courtyard house has remained a valid residential type over thousands of years.
